Tips for Painting a Black Front Door

1. Choose the right type of paint. For a black door, you’ll want to use a high quality durable and long-lasting paint like the one I used Rust-Oleum Door and Trim Paint in Black created especially for front doors to dry 3x faster than oil paints.

I love this black paint because it looks like a farmhouse paint color when paired with that magnolia leaf wreath!

2. Pick the perfect paintbrush. When painting a black door, you’ll want to use a brush that is both soft and dense. This will help you avoid leaving any streaks or brush marks in the paint.

3. Use painter’s tape. To get clean lines and avoid paint bleed, be sure to use painter’s tape around the edges of the door.

4. Paint in thin layers. To avoid any drips or runs, it’s best to paint in thin layers. Allow each layer to dry completely before adding another.

5. Place a rubberband around your paint can to drag your brush across to keep your paint can rim clean from puddles of paint.

Black is said to be the most popular front door color of 2022! Get on the bandwagon today and give your otherwise mundane front door a more modern look with black paint!

Does a Black Door Increase Home Value?

WooHoo! According to a Zillow Paint Color Analysis, a black front door could increase the price of your home by 2.9 percent! Now that’s what I call an easy way to make a quick return.

What does a Black Front Door Signify?

Black absorbs, attracts, and brings in positive energy, which makes it a great choice as a front door color. The color black is synonymous with authority, power, and strength. A black door communicates that a home is owned by a sophisticated person.

What temperature is too cold to paint outside?

I hear this question a lot; especially since I live in Texas where the temps can get extreme in either direction. The truth is the temperature matters!

Ideally, you’ll want to choose a day to paint your front door when the outside temperature is between 60° to around 85°F with little to no wind. Too much wind can cause the paint to dry too quickly; especially with this quick-drying Rust-Oleum paint. Remember, it dries 3x faster than traditional oil-based paints.

Even better shoot for 40% to 70% humidity for the perfect range to ensure that the paint dries properly.

Can I paint my front door without taking it down?

Um, yes! It’s often recommended that you remove your front door in order to paint it; however, who has time for that?

I painted mine without taking it off its hinges. Just leave it cracked open until the edges are dry which doesn’t take but a few minutes with this new Rust-Oleum Door & Trim paint! I’m telling you it dries super fast!

  2. Beautiful! I’m needing to do our church doors. Do you think that paint would work on a metal door?!

    1. southerncrush says:

Yes! It works on metal and wood!

  3. Wish I had this paint a few years back when we painted one side of my mudroom door (I choose navy) anyway it took over a week to dry I’ve never got to outside or the rest of the doors after that long drying wait and I still have almost a hole gallon of paint just waiting.
I assumed it was the summer high humidity we have here in Missouri causing my paint drying issues.
