Ingredients for Making Hot Cocoa Cookies
- 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp sea salt
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
- Mini marshmallows
- Extra chocolate morsels to garnish with
How To Make Hot Cocoa Cookies
You can easily bake up a batch of these hot chocolate cookies a few days before you want to serve them. In an airtight container, these cookies will last for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.
- Preheat the oven to 325° Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Next, add in the eggs and vanilla extract then mix until well combined.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In thirds, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until well combined.
- Fold in the chocolate morsels.
- Using a medium-sized cookie scoop, place cookie dough onto the baking sheet.
- Dip your thumb in water or spray with non-stick baking spray and create a “well” on the top of the cookies.
- Place 2-4 marshmallows into the well.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until the center has just set.
- Top with extra marshmallows and chocolate morsels while the cookies are still warm.
- Allow to cool at room temperature before serving.

- Instead of semi-sweet morsels try dark chocolate chips, peanut butter chips or Skor bar chips.
- Stir in a touch of mint extract for a minty flavor.

I haven’t tested these cookies with hot chocolate but if you do decide to use hot chocolate make sure to reduce the sugar content as hot chocolate usually has sugar in it.
What’s the difference between hot chocolate and cocoa powder?
Hot chocolate mix usually has sugar and sometimes milk powder added to it while cocoa powder is just cocoa.
What is a substitute for cocoa powder in cookies?
If you’ve run out of cocoa powder you can substitute unsweetened baking chocolate. For every 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder use 1 ounce of baking chocolate. Note making this substitution may change the taste and texture of the cookies.
