Step by Step Tutorial on How to Make a Folded Book Page Flower Vase
If you prefer video, here is the YouTube tutorial for you!
I was first inspired to make this DIY book art by my friend Hiedi Scott with DIY Dreaming!
With just a few simple steps, you can turn a forgotten book into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind vase that will impress anyone who sees it.
Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner, this project is fun, easy, and incredibly rewarding. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Choose Your Book
Select a book that you no longer need. Ideally, choose one with a sturdy cover and enough pages to create the flower vase. The thicker the book, the fuller the vase.
Step 2: Prepare the Book
Remove the dust jacket. Open the book and decide how many pages you want to fold. A good starting point is to use about five pages going five deep on each side from the middle, depending on the thickness of your book.
Mark the middle of the book at the point at which you’d like to start your vase with a pencil.
Step 3: Begin Cutting the Book Pages
Start by taking a section of five pages and cut them down to your pencil mark until you reach the center of the book. Then tear them out from the top leaving the bottom section in tact.
Repeat this process until all of the desired pages are trimmed down.
Step 4: Fold the Book Pages into a Flower Vase
Now begin folding sections of about five pages in half in towards the center and secure with a bit of hot glue. This will be the base of your vase.
Continue folding the pages in sections of five, one by one, making sure each fold is neat and aligned with the others at the bottom.
As you fold, you’ll notice the book pages start to take on a vase-like shape.
If you find the vase is not stable enough, you can add a dab of hot glue between some of the pages to secure them in place.
Step 5: Decorate with Flowers
Now is the time to arrange the artificial flowers directly into the folds of the book.
To give your vase a more personalized touch, consider adding some decorative elements.
You could tie a ribbon or lace around the center of the vase, paint the edges of the book pages, or even add small embellishments like bling or charms.
I added a spooky skeleton hand and feathers.
Step 6: Display Your Book Page Flower Vase
Your folded book page flower vase is now complete! Place it on a shelf, mantel, or as a centerpiece on your dining table.
Whether you fill it with fresh blooms or silk flowers, this unique piece of book art will add a literary touch to any room.
Tips and Tricks:
- Choose the right book: Thicker books work best, and hardcover books provide better stability for your vase.
- Experiment with folds: Try different amounts of book pages to create various size vases.
- Keep it steady: If your vase isn’t standing as firmly as you’d like, use a bit of hot glue between some of the pages to secure the structure.
- Get creative with embellishments: Adding paint, ribbon, or other decorations can really make your vase stand out.
This folded book page flower vase project is a fantastic way to repurpose old books into beautiful, functional art.
