Step 1. Add parchment paper to the dough bowl
I like to layer it with parchment paper first so it is easy to remove.
Just cut out a template that works with your size bowl.
Step 2. Add rice to the bowl
A quick tip is to place rice down first on top of the paper. It gives it dimension and the sand and stones will layer much easier than if you just added the sand.
Step 3. Add your sand and stones
Now you want to slowly pour in the sand and crushed stones to your dough bowl.
Look how pretty these aqua crushed stones are:
Step 4. Paint the Mermaid Tails
I found the most beautiful colors of spray paint from Crafters Square at Dollar Tree that instantly made me think of summer and the ocean. The soft aqua and lime green colors are perfect for the mermaid tails.
The bottles are a spray which makes them so easy to craft with.
Step 5. Blend paint with wet wipes
Simply spray a mix of colors onto the mermaid tails and use wet ones (also from the dollar store) to blend in the paint. It reminds me of the old sponge-painting days. Does anyone remember that?
Step 6. Add Diamond Dust
Everything is better with a little sparkle, especially mermaids! Add a little diamond dust to the wet tails so the dust will stick.
Look at how pretty that is!
Step 7. Add stickers to the votive
Place assorted coastal glass stickers onto each candle votive holder. This is such a simple way to update plain glass.
Step 8. Add jute and rope dog toys
I’ve been having fun decorating with dollar store dog toys! Did you see the coastal wreath I just made? That also used a different style of dog toy!
Simply place a couple of different style decorative balls into the bowl. Easy peasy!
Step 9. Arrange candles
Next up, arrange candles randomly around the dough bowl so it doesn’t look “arranged”. 🙂
Step 10. Add mermaid tails
Now that the mermaid tails are dry, you can place them in the bowl. They look great standing in the bowl. It gives it a little bit of height and dimension.
It’s all coming together!
Step 11. Add seashells
Place seashells of assorted shapes and sizes around the dough bowl. Be sure to collect some if you can the next time you are at the beach!
Step 12. Layer glass beads
Did you see the lovely glass beads I found? You may have seen a sneak peek of them on Instagram. They are even prettier in person.
If you don’t have glass beads, you can definitely add wood beads. With the jute balls, they will also work just fine! That’s all there is to it…
Now just light a candle, pour yourself your favorite drink, and enjoy your beautiful coastal farmhouse decor dough bowl!
Be sure to PIN this one for later!
Dough bowls are something I love to decorate with. You can even add a touch of glam to a wood bowl by updating it with silver leaf like I show HERE.
