How to Install Barn Doors

First step measure barn door opening

Measure the doorway opening space to determine the size of doors needed. Then measure either side of the opening space adding the measurements of each door.

NOTE: Make sure that your doors will open all the way in your space without issue. One of our doors hits the tv; however, it opens enough to work.

next add the header

In order to hang your barn doors, you will need barn door hardware and it will need a header to hang from. This can be a piece of wood hung above your current trim. We used a 2X8 piece of pre-painted wood that matched the trim.

NOTE: You may want to place a tarp over your flooring to catch all of the mess! Oops!

Order a hanging hardware kit that matches your measurements. This will vary based upon your opening size and whether you’re hanging one or two barn doors. Ours was 8 feet long with hardware for two doors.

Secure the barn door hardware with the included screws to the header above the doorway opening.

Attach rollers to glass french doors

Screw the included rollers to the glass french doors and hang them up on the hardware track. If you choose to add the floor guides or stoppers to the base of the doors, this would be the time to add them. We decided not to add these as our carpet did the trick.

This was my favorite part of this project! It’s like the jewelry for the doors! We chose modern yet simple door handles. The dark bronze matches the hanging hardware and is heavy duty.

The handles really set the doors off in a way that is trendy and pops. They give a bit of weight to the front of the doors and make them glide when opened!

Adding the sliding barn doors created a wonderful divider between the hallway and the living room as well as a really nice look. Hanging glass french doors are a bit different from traditional barn doors, but they definitely still work and function for adding much needed privacy to our living room.

I love the look and would do it again in a heartbeat! It’s so nice to be able to close off the living area and feel like it is a separate space from the rest of the house.

The glass on the french doors makes it seem like everything is still open and not closed in. It’s the perfect mix of privacy and beauty.
