- 1 angel food cake (you can use an angel food cake mix or buy a pre-made one)
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 2 cups fresh blueberries
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Preparing the Angel Food Cake
Using an Angel Food Cake Pan: If you’re making your angel food cake from scratch or using an angel food cake mix, you’ll need an angel food cake pan.
These pans are specifically designed to help the cake rise properly and achieve its signature airy texture. Follow the super easy instructions (just add water) on the mix box or your recipe, and let the cake cool completely upside down before assembling the trifle.
Buying Pre-made: If you’re short on time, you can buy a pre-made angel food cake from your local bakery or grocery store. Not the same, but they work in a pinch! You may need 2 or 3 if it is a small angel food cake loaf.
Making the Whipped Cream
You can purchase your whipped cream, like I did, or for an extra rich flavor and homemade taste, make your own below.
- Whip the Cream: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream with an electric mixer until it starts to thicken.
- Add Sugar and Vanilla: Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip, or you’ll end up with butter.
Slicing the Strawberries
Slice up the fresh strawberries and set them aside.

Assembling the 4th of July Trifle
- Prepare the Cake: If you’re using a homemade or pre-made cake, cut it into bite-sized cubes gently using a bread knife.
- Layer the Ingredients: In a large trifle dish or a clear glass bowl, start with a layer of angel food cake cubes.
- Next, add a layer of sliced strawberries and blueberries.
- Top with a layer of whipped cream.
- Repeat the layers until you’ve used all your ingredients, finishing with a layer of whipped cream. (I chose to only use the whipped cream on the top)
- Garnish: For a festive touch, garnish the top with whole strawberries, blueberries, and fresh mint leaves. I used a small sprig from my Trader Joe’s spearmint herb plant.
Tips and Tricks for Angel Food Cake
Angel Food Cake with Strawberries: To enhance the flavor, you can macerate the strawberries by tossing them with a bit of sugar and letting them sit for 15 minutes. This will draw out their juices and make them even sweeter. (I highly recommend this)
Angel Food Cake Calories: Angel food cake is known for being lighter and lower in calories compared to other cakes, making it a great option for a ‘healthier’ dessert. On average, one slice of angel food cake has about 72 calories….winning!
Can You Freeze Angel Food Cake? Yes, you can freeze angel food cake. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then place it in a freezer-safe bag. It can be frozen for up to 4 months. Thaw it at room temperature before using it in your trifle. However, I prefer fresh baked and it doesn’t take very long to make it.
