Before we begin, let’s gather all the supplies. Here’s what you’ll need to make your own tea cup candle:

Tea Cup and Saucer: Choose a charming tea cup and saucer set. Vintage tea cups from thrift stores work wonderfully.
Candle Kit: Make sure your kit includes wax, wicks, and a wick holder.
Dried Flowers: Lavender, rose petals, or chamomile are lovely choices.
Pressed Flowers: These will add a decorative touch.
Tweezers: For placing the dried flowers on top of the wax.
Scissors: For trimming the wick.
Hot Glue Gun: To secure the wick if not using a microwavable candle kit.
Double Boiler: For melting the wax if not using a microwavable candle kit.
Thermometer: To monitor the wax temperature if not using a microwavable candle kit.
Essential Oils: Optional, for adding fragrance if not using a microwavable candle kit.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Tea Cup Candle

Step 1: Prepare Your Tea Cup

Start by thoroughly cleaning your tea cup and saucer. Make sure there’s no dust or residue that could interfere with the wax. Once clean, dry it completely.

Step 2: Secure the Wick

Peel back the sticker provide in your candle kit or use a hot glue gun, attach the wick to the bottom center of the tea cup. Hold it in place for a few seconds to ensure it adheres properly.

If your candle kit includes a wick holder, use it to keep the wick centered while you pour the wax. If it does not, use a pair of chopsticks still connected.

Step 3: Add Dried Flowers Inside Tea Cup (optional)

If you are using a clear tea cup like this one from the Dollar Tree, now is the time to add dried flowers to the side. This is optional, but makes it so pretty!!

I used an artist brush to dab a tiny bit of warm wax to the flower and then placed them onto the sides of the tea cup. It worked like a charm!

Step 4: Melt the Wax

Microwave your candle kit per the instructions. Mine took about 2 minutes on High.

If you are using traditional candle wax, fill the bottom part of your double boiler with water and place the wax into the top part.

Heat the water gently and allow the wax to melt completely, stirring occasionally. Use a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature; it should be around 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5: Add Fragrance

If you’re using essential oils, now is the time to add them.

These are my favorites! I use them in all kinds of DIY projects and crafts!

About 10-15 drops should be enough, depending on how strong you want the scent to be. Stir well to ensure the fragrance is evenly distributed.

Step 6: Pour the Wax

Carefully pour the melted wax into your tea cup. Fill it almost to the top, leaving a little space so the wax doesn’t overflow. Make sure the wick stays centered as you pour.

Step 7: Add Dried Flowers to the Top

While the wax is still warm, gently place dried flowers on the surface. Lavender and rose petals add a lovely touch. I used these dried flowers that came in a fun variety pack. You can find them here.

Press them lightly into the wax so they’re partially submerged but still visible.

Step 8: Let It Set

Allow the wax to cool and harden completely. This can take a few hours. Don’t move the tea cup during this time to avoid disturbing the setting wax.

Step 9: Trim the Wick

Once the candle is completely set, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This will ensure a clean, even burn.

Using a small brush, apply a thin layer of candle wax to the front of each pressed flower. Carefully place the flowers on the inside of the tea cup, arranging them in a pleasing pattern. Once all the flowers are in place, let the wax dry completely.

Will the Dried Flowers Burn?

The dried flowers will burn as the candle burns down. The wax that is surrounding the flowers keeps them moist enough to stay stafe; however, you should never leave a candle unattended.
