Do you need to peel peaches to make jam?
If you are using fresh peach and you are wondering whether to peel them, know that this is a personal choice. When I make this jam using fresh peaches I usually keep the peels on.
How do you peel fresh peaches?
If you are using fresh peaches and you decide to peel them, I have found the easiest way is to blanch them first. Place the peaches in boiling water, remove and cool by running under cold water.
How ripe should fresh peaches be to make peach jam?
To make peeling the peaches easier I suggest you use just ripe peaches, not overly ripe ones.
Which peaches are best for peach jam?
Though any kind of peaches are good for making jam, I like clingstone peaches the best. Don’t worry too much about which kind of peaches to use though. Just use whatever you can find locally. We always like to grab several bushels when we go to Hams Orchard. Read about our trip here.
Can you make peach jam without pectin?
Yes you can make peach jam without using pectin. Just follow the steps in this recipe and you’ll see how easy it is. The boiling of the peaches with the sugars helps it to thicken without the use of pectin.
How can I thicken up my peach jam?
If you find your peach jam is too watery you can add in some pectin or chia seeds to thicken it up.
Do I have to rinse canned peaches?
If you are using canned peaches and they are packed in syrup I suggest you rinse them off. I like to use peaches that are canned in juice from concentrate and not those canned in syrup. The juice from the concentrate has less sugar than syrup. If you can only find peaches in syrup then rinse them off to remove any extra sugar.
